On September 5, 2013 Children’s Resource & Referral Thrift Store hosted a Grand Opening celebration that included a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony by the Santa Maria Valley Chamber of Commerce. The festivities began at 4:00pm, where over 40 individuals including Chamber Ambassadors, CRR Board Members, CRR staff and friends all joined together to share in this memorial occasion. Executive Director, Michelle Graham, thanked the Santa Maria Valley Chamber of Commerce for their ongoing support over the years and also welcomed the new CRR Thrift Store staff to the Team. Ms Graham shared that the hope for the new CRR Thrift Store is to allow Children’s Resource & Referral the opportunity to expand services in the community and specifically to children and families! Children’s Resource & Referral has been providing services in Santa Barbara County for more than 40 years, and now with this expansion to a local non-profit Thrift Store, CRR hopes to look for more opportunities to best serve the community.

Children’s Resource & Referral of Santa Barbara County had the honor of issuing the First Fund-A-Star Scholarship of $1,000 to a deserving family and Family Child Care Provider. The scholarship is designed to support a family who find themselves in a short term financial crisis; and need help to maintain their current high quality family child care. The La France Family and Sunshine Childcare were chosen from several outstanding applicants. This lovely family of 4 found themselves struggling when the father, Brian La France was laid off from work last February. Brian continues to actively seek employment, while Kristy La France maintains her career as a Special Needs Teacher. The family has been attending Sunshine Childcare for 2 years, where the children have bonded with their Child Care Provider, Joan Velazquez and have made several friendships. However, with their personal crisis and the reality of being over income for any type of State Support, the family was faced with removing the children from the stability and continuity of this care. With this Fund-A-Star Scholarship, the family is able to maintain the care for another several months, as they are hopeful that Brain will be able to obtain work before the scholarship runs out!

Children’s Resource & Referral plans to issue four Fund-A-Star Scholarships per year, and with additional community support, they would like to increase this to serve many more families who find themselves caught in a temporary struggle, and who can not quality for other types of State or County aid. If you would like to support a family, please contact Michelle Graham at 805-925-6701 or visit our website @ sbfcc.org and click “Donate”.
